I've carried a cross

I've carried a cross
That wasn't mine
Played the saviours
As I was taught to

And all of this remains
Like a tattoo on the heart
And my soul is swallowed
By the ghosts of the past

I've carried a cross
A heavy heavy cross
Pretending to wash sins away
For I could hide mine

I bled and I bled so much
Without noticing it
Years of life flooding
Betrayal of the future

I've carried a cross
My flag my reason my cause
My soul was etched in its wood
No love without sacrifice

Once I dropped my cross
My shoulders at last felt
The Lightness of Being
That I couldn't even bear
