My top drummers

Gavin Harrison

Gavin, always the King! I admire his craft so much! Gavin is renowned for his incredibly complex and unconventional rhythms, his precise control, and his ability to seamlessly integrate intricate patterns within Porcupine Tree’s dense and challenging compositions. He’s a master of polyrhythms and utilizes a wide range of techniques – from odd-time signatures to rich and complex fills – to create a truly immersive listening experience. Iconic track: Harridan.

Vinnie Colaiuta

I admire Vinnie's remarkably fluid and musical touch. This guy knows what dynamic is! Whether with Sting on the Ten Summoner's Tales album or with Jeff Beck on the legendary Love At Ronnie Scott's, he grings his powerful, driving rhythms, his incredible fills, and his ability to blend diverse musical styles. And always with his recognizable sharp and caler tone. Iconic track: I Was Brought to My Senses.

Stewart Copeland

Imagine this guy, in the middle of the early punk and new wave scene, revolutionizing drumming style! Stewart Copeland brought a playful and syncopated rhythmic style to The Police. He introduced elements of Reaggae, Latin and Caribbean rhythms into the band’s sound, creating a unique and instantly recognizable groove. Iconic track: Message In A Bottle.

John Bonham

John Bonham is widely considered one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. He was the master of both groove and power, with an unparalleled sense of dynamics, a powerful and resonant tone. He had a remarkable ability to create powerful and evocative grooves. His craft was both technically brilliant and deeply expressive. Even if the drum pattern of Kashmir is the simplest ever, the way John mixes 3/4 with 4/4 time signature is utterly brilliant. Iconic track: Kashmir (I said!).

Phil Collins

With a microphone, Phil is just OK for me. But behind a drumkit, wow! This man knows where and when to place a kick! Of course, I focus more on the Genesis era than on the solo one. Phil is known for his precise, controlled playing and his ability to seamlessly blend rock, pop, and even elements of jazz. Iconic track: Fading Lights (and the magnificient synth&drums solo with Tony Banks!)

Rob Turner

Here is the youngest lad of the gang. Rob Turner was the first drummer of the jazz trio Gogo Penguin until 2021. Rob is a master of polyrhythms and odd-time signatures and brings a very organic feel to his playing. Yep, I noticed that too: I love drummers at ease with polyrhythms... Iconic track: Unspeakable World

Just for you own curiosity, watch the videos of Camille Bigeault, a French drummer who masters guess what? Yep. Polyrhythms.
