Vangelis
Vangelis was a visionary composer and a true genius. He pioneered the possibilities of electronic music. His sound is characterized by lush, evocative soundscapes, blending orchestral textures with synthesizers and electronic effects to create truly immersive and cinematic experiences. I admire a lot his stunning improvisation skills. He pushed the boundaries of what a keyboard player could achieve. Take a look a this video where he plays an entire orchestra with only 2 hands (and 2 feet...). Or take time to listen to this interview given to the French television. Iconic track : Main Titles (Blade Runner)
Rick Wright
Rick Wright is one of the most influential keyboard players in rock history. Period. He was the architect of Pink Floyd’s atmospheric soundscapes, blending his distinctive Hammond organ tones with synth textures to create washes of sound, thick textures, and haunting melodies. Wright's playing was central to the band’s sound. Iconic track : Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Tony Banks
Genesis has a lot to owe to Tony Banks. He masterfully blended his classical influences with rock sensibilities, creating beautiful and complex keyboard arrangements that are integral to Genesis’s progressive sound. I love all his sounds and textures. Banks's playing is characterized by delicate, sometimes intricate parts, with a deep understanding of musical architecture. Iconic track: Fading Lights (with a wonderful synth solo).
Stevie Wonder
Stevie is a Wonder. He really is. His keyboard playing is inextricably linked to his songwriting and overall artistry. His soulful voice is always blended with his keyboard techniques, incorporating synthesizers, clavinet, and Rhodes to create a unique and instantly recognizable sound. Thanks to Stevie, we all know that keyboards can groove. Iconic track: Superstition (of course!)
Mick McNeil
Mick McNeil’s keyboard playing in Simple Minds was integral to the band’s signature sound. Yet another sound architect. When listening to Simple Minds album, it is clear (at least to me) that Mick took his time to tailor the right sound for each song. Iconic track : Street Fighting Years (a masterpiece!)
