Last night, I had the joy— and that’s an understatement — of watching Queen’s Budapest concert in IMAX, that famous performance on 27 July 1986. The film has been fully restored, the sound completely remixed, and the result is simply breathtaking.
A massive, visceral sound that grabs you by the gut from the very first note. Superb, crisp, vivid image. And Freddie… Freddie, bigger and more powerful than ever. He commands the screen just as he commands a stadium of 80,000 people. Every gesture, every glance at the camera, every one of his ‘signature steps’ is both ultra-precise and yet spontaneous, offered freely, as if he were addressing you alone.
As for Brian May, he’s fascinating (yes, I love him). He’s in complete control. You can sense he’s both relaxed and razor-sharp, alternating between rhythm parts and solos with astonishing ease, with the unique sound of his Red Special.
And then there’s that chemistry between the four of them — you can tell the band is a tight-knit unit, that the members know each other inside out, that a simple glance is enough to launch a break or kick off a chorus. That kind of natural chemistry is rare. I really feel that I’ve seen Queen at their absolute peak.
